JOY ALUKKAS CASE IN HYDERABAD
In May 2006, the Hyderabad police solved the Joyalukkas heist case and arrested two burglars in Mumbai within days of the robbery. Approximately 70% of the stolen valuables, worth around ₹10 crore (100 million rupees), were recovered.
Investigation details
- The crime: Gold and diamond jewelry were stolen from the Alukkas showroom in Punjagutta, which had opened in late March of that year.
- The discovery: Showroom managers discovered the burglary on a Tuesday afternoon after the store had closed the previous night.

- Police officials, including City Police Commissioner A.K. Mohanty, rushed to the scene and found a rope hanging from the terrace, indicating a possible escape route.
- Forensic teams and a sniffer dog were brought in to gather clues.
- Police suspected the involvement of two or three people.

- The breakthrough and arrests:
- Based on a tip-off, Mumbai Crime Branch sleuths arrested two burglars, Vinod Rambali Singh and Ajay Jawahar Singh, at a hostel in Borivli, Mumbai.
- They were found to be involved in another jewelry heist in Dahisar the previous year.
- The Hyderabad police traveled to Mumbai to take custody of the accused.
- Modus operandi: The burglars entered the shop by cutting open the shutter using metal sheet cutters.
- Uncaptured accomplice: A third accomplice involved in the heist managed to escape.
